How to Choose a Dry Cabinet?

There are different types of dry cabinets available in the market – they control the environment/humidity within them to prevent stored contents from moisture related damage or oxidation.

But what are the key differences between the models available in the market, and which one will suit you best? Let’s take a look.

Ultra Low Humidity Dry Cabinet

These low humidity cabinets are great for storing moisture-sensitive devices (MSDs) across various levels defined by IPC and JEDEC JSTD-033D standards.

They can maintain an internal humidity level without the use of nitrogen/dry air, vacuum or heat, and are the most cost effective/energy saving dry cabinets of the range available.

Depending on the model, humidity levels can be controlled at <1% or 5% RH. Some models even offer adjustable humidity controls.

Dry Air/N2 Cabinet

The N2/dry air cabinets rapidly reduce humidity and purge oxygen with the inflow of nitrogen to achieve a desired internal environment quickly. They work faster but are more expensive than the standard dry cabinets.

They are however crucial for storing components more sensitive to oxidation, or when the expected frequency of opening the cabinets is high. Dr. Storage’s N2 cabinets keep cost low by controlling the inflow of N2 – pausing the inflow when the desired relative humidity in the cabinet is reached. This saves an estimated 30~60% of N2.

Baking Dry Cabinet

Essentially the ultra low humidity dry cabinet with heating function. When the heating function is turned on, the baking dry cabinets dehumidify twice as quickly as a regular dry cabinet. They also ensure that the moisture evaporated doesn’t condense again. While they consume more energy than the dry cabinet, Dr. Storage’s baking dry cabinets are still energy efficient. They use about a quarter of the energy compared to a traditional oven.
